Storage Tips
Maximize your space
Use storage containers that are similar in size. They stack better. Use the full height of your space. Be sure to put the heaviest containers on the bottom. A freestanding shelf unit is helpful for smaller items.
If you are using cardboard boxes, don't over pack or under pack them. Over packed boxes will burst while under packed boxes will crush. They should also be sealed with packing tape to help keep them intact.
Can you find it?
Marking all six sides of your containers will help you to identify its contents from all angles. Leave a path to the back of your area for access.
Perhaps a map of where each container has been placed will be helpful when you need to retrieve a stored item. You might record the contents of each container so that later, you don't need to look in each container to find what you are looking for.
Storing Furniture
A couch or sofa (not sofa beds) can usually be stored on end to take less floor space. Tables often have removable legs. Utilize drawers to store smaller items.
If you are using non climate-controlled space, consider a coat of furniture wax before placing items in storage. Table legs can be bundled and attaching hardware can be placed in a zip lock baggie and taped to them. Cloth covers or bed sheets will help protect as well.
Albums & Books
Store albums and books on end rather than flat, in a full vertical direction. Remember to use smaller containers so they are not too heavy.
Non climate-controlled space is subject to temperature extremes. Many plastics can warp in the heat or become brittle in the cold. Humidity can also adversely affect certain belongings.
Gardening Tools
Gardening tools should be thoroughly cleaned before storing, and small engines should be drained of oil and gasoline.
Tools such as rakes and shovels can be bundled together. In non-climate controlled units, a light coating of oil on unprotected metal will help to preserve it.
Perishables & Liquids
Never store perishables, such as food products. Flammable liquids may not be stored.
If you are using non climate-controlled space, remember that stored items will be subjected to extreme temperatures, both hot and cold.
